Kat’s Anthology

1)  Roger Rabbit by Sleeping With Sirens

Nobody's gonna love you
If you can't display a way to capture this
Nobody's gonna hold your hand
And guide you through
No, it's up for you to understand
Nobody's gonna feel your pain
When all is done and it's time for you to walk away
So when you have today
You should say all that you have to say

Sleeping With Sirens is an American Post Hardcore band from Florida, US. I specifically chose this song because it reflects the teen society these days.  There is a lot of complaining and a lot of doing nothing to make things better. Nobody is gonna hold your hand and guide you through everything in your life, you have to grow up and solve them yourself.

2) One Shot by B.A.P

Shine the light like Martin Luther King
Get your mind outta the gutter
It’s too early for failure, you’re still young
One shot, one chance
There’s no second chance, don’t lose it, get ready now
Hell yeh, challenge yourself, spread your small self out, just do it
One shot!
Are you gonna give in? Are you gonna be caught by the surrounding traps?
Only one shot!
Don’t run away, turn around and face your faces
Even if the world turns away from you
Protect yourself, that’s the right attitude
Everybody already know?
Hey shout your voice to the world?

B.A.P is a S. Korean boy group. The genre is K-Pop (Korean pop). This song means a lot to me as well. Its extremely motivational. Young people now a days are “failures” according to older generations, we get bagged on a bunch! “Its too early for failure, you’re still young.” It motivates you to challenge yourself and get your ideas out there into the world. Even if everybody doubts you, don’t run away, instead, show yourself and prove yourself.

3) No More Dream by BTS
I wanna big house, big cars & big rings
But actually, I don’t have any big dreams
Haha, I live quite comfortably
Even if I don’t dream, no one says anything
Everyone is thinking the same way as me
I completely forgot about my childhood when I had a lot of dreams
Don’t worry about college, I’ll at least go to a school that’s far away
Ok mom, I’m going to the library right now
What is the you that you’ve dreamed of?
Who do you see in the mirror? I gotta say
Go on your path, even if you live for a day
Do something, put away your weakness
Why aren’t you saying anything?
You don’t wanna study but you’re scared to quit school?
See, you’re already getting ready for school
Please grow up, you’re all talk dude, you have a glass mentality boy
(Stop) Ask yourself if you’ve ever worked hard for anything
That’s a lie, you such a liar
See me, see me, ya you’re a hypocrite
Why are you telling to go a different path? Worry about yourself
And not others.

This song truly speaks out to me.  Because I feel like society and my family suppresses me from what I want to be and do in the future.  And some friends.. “friends” that I have, doubts me for my dreams and wishes. The line “Worry about yourself and not others” describes my situation, my “friends” should worry about their own lives first before telling me what to do with mine. This song encourages me to follow my dream and prove everybody wrong for ever doubting me.

4) Beautiful Stranger by f(x)
The kid called Curiosity is next to me
It calls me and follows me around from morning to night
The detachment of dreams and reality resemble you
It doesn’t matter, tell me everything, I’m ready
A strange person, a strange us, I want to get to know you, deep into that mask
No matter how heavy the door is
I’ll keep it open so that we can talk a little more
Beautiful stranger, an angel with a clear soul
The music that reaches through the tips of my hands, that music possesses my heart
Beautiful stranger, you are mysterious to them
They’re scared of you because they can’t understand, so they just push you away, no
The stories in the deep silences
You came from a different image, a different world
When you look at me as you extend your long hands
Take me to the place where you are

This song describes the outcasts out there. To some you are strange, you are weird and not socially acceptable. But to others, you are a Beautiful Stranger. Others want to hear your story, they are attracted to you, even though they don’t know you. And it doesn’t matter who you are, you are beautiful and are wanted.

5) Unbreakable by B.A.P

(Though you fall down hundreds of times, keep getting up - we'll never break down)
Remember the endless sweat and memories
Our one and only story - everything

* I won't ever break
I won't ever fall down
Even if the storm tries to swallow me
I'm Unbreakable

** Even if I die, I won't break
Even if I die, I won't give up
Even if my wings are trampled in the darkness
You Know I'm Unbreakable

In the beginning, when everyone said we would fail
We clenched our jaws and sharpened our wings
Even if it was dirty and upsetting, we held it all in
We fought and won all of our self-battles

This song was one of the first ones I heard from this group. Its about standing tall and having self confidence. It taught me that even if you fail, you haven’t failed, you’re just a step closer to success. Giving up isn’t an option. Imagine yourself in a fight, when you get knocked down, would you stay down and beg for mercy? No, don’t do that, get up and show them what you’re made up, don’t be pushed around. Make them respect you and your will to get back up on your feet.

6) Still Life With Dynamite by Alysse McCanna

I wanted proof of my existence,
something pulsing with life, tangible
to display as evidence for passersby.

7) My Monophonic Heart by Martin Balgach

My monophonic heart
measures the weight of butterflies
with a beat. My monophonic heart
is as true as an out-of-tune fiddle.
It sings the tired tune of solitude
like an old rooster
on a rainy morning
in the middle of nowhere.
My monophonic heart
is waiting for tomorrow
as if tomorrow is a train
that will never come.
My monophonic heart
is an icicle without snow.
It’s a bud in spring
that doesn’t know
how to become a leaf.
My monophonic heart
is a bored child with thick glasses
picking his nose for hours
and sometimes my monophonic heart
tries to define itself
like a dog choking himself on a leash.
But really
my monophonic heart
is a scratched record skipping a beat—
it’s a dusty needle
filling in the grooves
with all this new noise.
I can relate to this, sometimes my “monochromatic” heart gets weighed down. Its hard to be happy and joyful all the time. It’s like every day, the same boring old emotions.

8) Hamlet by Shakespeare

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?—To die,—to sleep,—
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to,—’tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To die,—to sleep;—
To sleep: perchance to dream:—ay, there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there’s the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,
The pangs of despis’d love, the law’s delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would these fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,—
The undiscover’d country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns,—puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought;
And enterprises of great pith and moment,
With this regard, their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.

9) One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey

The doctor fishes his glasses out again and puts them on and looks to where McMurphy is pointing.

"Right here, Doc. The nurse left this part out while she was summarizing my record. Where it says, 'Mr. McMurphy has evidenced repeated'-I just want to make sure I'm understood completely, Doc-'repeated outbreaks of passion that suggest the possible diagnosis of psychopath.' He told me that 'psychopath' means I fight and fuh-pardon me, ladies-means I am he put it overzealous in my sexual relations. Doctor, is that real serious?"

He asks it with such a little-boy look of worry and concern all over his broad, tough face that the doctor can't help bending his head to hide another little snicker in his collar, and his glasses fall from his nose dead center back in his pocket. All of the Acutes are smiling too, now, and even some of the Chronics.

"I mean that overzealousness, Doc, have you ever been troubled by it?"

The doctor wipes his eyes. "No, Mr. McMurphy, I'll admit I haven't. I am interested, however, that the doctor at the work farm added this statement: 'Don't overlook the possibility that this man might be feigning psychosis to escape the drudgery of the work farm.’" He looks up at McMurphy. "And what about that, Mr. McMurphy?"

"Doctor"-he stands up to his full height, wrinkles his forehead, and holds out both arms, open and honest to all the wide world-"do I look like a sane man?"

The doctor is working so hard to keep from giggling again he can't answer. McMurphy pivots away from the doctor and asks the same thing of the Big Nurse: "Do I?" (1.5.52-58)

I like this excerpt because  it shows that   sometimes, even sane people want to pretend to be insane.   McMurphy is pretending to be insane so he will end up in a  mental ward so he doesn’t have to live a hard life. I also like this because McMurphy uses humor and smarts to make everyone believe that he is on their side and he is just messing with them.

10) Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I like this poem because  it is sort of like a paradox. He describes how different people feel right before death, and what they wish they could’ve done differently before they go into the good night.

Family Friend Poems

11) The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

I am a person who likes to think about topics such as this.  I always wonder how my life would be like if I did something differently or took a different path.

12)  Walden by Thoreau

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."

I like this because in a way, it speaks to me by not going with conformity, its ok to be different.
